The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has ruled out further action on the recall petition against the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, citing failure to meet the constitutional requirement. In a statement released on Thursday, April 3, 2025, after its weekly meeting, INEC disclosed that a thorough review of the signatures/thumbprints submitted by petitioners fell short of the legal threshold set by Section 69(a) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).According to the Commission, a valid recall petition requires signatures from more than half of the registered voters in the affected senatorial district. With Kogi Central having 474,554 registered voters, the petition needed at least 237,278 valid signatures. However, INEC’s verification exercise confirmed only 208,132 signatures, representing 43.86% of the registered voters—29,146 short of the required threshold."Consequently, the petition has not met the requirement of Section 69(a) of the Constitution. Therefore, no further action shall be taken on the recall of the Senator," the statement signed by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information & Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, read. The electoral body emphasized its commitment to fairness and due process, outlining the steps it followed, including notifying the Senator, informing the Senate’s presiding officer, and making its findings public via its website and social media platforms. With INEC’s decision, the embattled Senator retains his seat, bringing the recall process to an end.
