Tragedy struck in Abia State on Friday night, April 4, 2025, as gunmen ambushed and brutally murdered two Chinese expatriates and a Nigerian police escort in Uturu, Isuikwuato Local Government Area.
The victims, identified as Mr. Quan and Mr. Cai—both site managers working for a mining company—were en route to their company’s mining site at Agukwu-Amaya in Ndundu Community when the assailants struck. According to the Abia State Police Command, the attack occurred in a coordinated ambush on the convoy carrying the expatriates and their security detail.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the attackers, suspected to be heavily armed men, opened fire on the convoy, instantly killing Mr. Quan, Mr. Cai, and a police escort officer, Inspector Audu Saidu.
The gunmen reportedly carted away the rifle belonging to the slain police officer, adding to concerns over the rising trend of arms theft from security personnel in the region.
The police say investigations are ongoing and have vowed to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice. The attack adds to a series of violent incidents in parts of the southeast, raising fresh concerns about the safety of foreign nationals and local residents alike.
More updates are expected as the situation unfolds.
