The Conscience of Ogoni People (COOP), a sociopolitical pressure group in Rivers State, has officially launched the recall process for Senator Barinada Mpigi, who represents Rivers South East Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
In a strongly worded statement issued by Chief Gani Topba, the group’s leader and spokesman, COOP accused Senator Mpigi of failing in his legislative duties and betraying the democratic expectations of his constituents.
“As we finally kick start the process for the recall of Sen. Barinada Mpigi, we call on all well-meaning stakeholders, youths, women, democrats and lovers of good things in the Rivers South East Senatorial District to rally round the recall process coordinators,” the statement read.
COOP urged constituents from the seven local government areas that make up the senatorial district—Khana, Gokana, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Andoni, and Opobo/Nkoro—to work closely with local coordinators in ensuring a smooth, transparent, and effective exercise.
The group emphasized that all LGA coordinators must strictly adhere to the guidelines recently issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), particularly in collecting valid endorsements and signatories from registered voters.
“This move must be done as quick as possible. Sen. Barry Mpigi, the anti-democratic agent who is supposed to be representing the senatorial district, has failed woefully in his representation of our people. It is now time for us to take our destiny in our hands and right the wrongs,” Chief Topba declared.
COOP promised to provide further updates in the coming days as the recall campaign gathers momentum.
