The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has joined the growing dissent against President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency in Rivers State, labelling the administration of retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas as a "military dictatorship" serving the interests of former governor and FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike. In a statement issued on Thursday, IYC Secretary-General, Maobuye Nangi Obu, accused Ibas of illegally suspending statutory commissions, board members, and key appointees of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, calling it a "reckless move" to dismantle democratic structures and loot state resources. The group cited the suspension of the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, commissioners, and special advisers as evidence of a "full-blown military dictatorship," warning that the actions risked plunging Rivers State into chaos. "This is not governance; it’s a desperate bid to remove checks and balances for unchecked plundering of Rivers’ wealth," the statement read, alleging Ibas is a "puppet" executing Wike’s agenda to control the state’s economy. The IYC claimed the crisis is a battle for the "economic soul of Rivers State," accusing Wike of leveraging federal might to install loyalists and sideline elected officials. It warned that sidelining legitimate officeholders could ignite political instability. "The people of Rivers will not be silenced. This cabal wants to turn our state into a personal estate," the group declared, invoking U.S. President Thomas Jefferson’s words on inalienable rights to condemn the "blatant abuse of power." Demanding an immediate reversal of the suspensions, the IYC urged Rivers citizens to resist what it called an "illegal takeover," emphasizing that only democratic governance could prevent further "looting."
